Why Choose Dental Implants?
Because implants are the most advanced technology that will replace the missing tooth from root to crown, choosing dental implants offers long-term improvements that will need very little, if any restorative dental care. Choosing dental implants is an affordable investment into your oral health that will save you time and money while improving the cosmetic and functional longevity of your smile.
Cosmetic - In many cases, the loss of one or more teeth can affect neighboring teeth, causing them to shift inward towards the site of the missing tooth or teeth creating a misaligned bite. Tooth loss may also cause the facial structure to take on a sunken, drooping appearance, causing premature wrinkles. Because dental implants are fused to the bone, they prevent early facial aging and associated changes.
Functional - Restoring missing teeth through dental implants allows for better chewing, speech and digestion. Much of this restored functionality is best achieved through the use of implants rather than stand-alone (non-implant supported) dentures or bridges. Crowns also prove to be much more resilient when anchored by a dental implant. The implant post fuses to the bone through osseointegration which helps promote bone regeneration to strengthen the integrity of the facial structure.
The Implant Procedure
The placement and restoration of dental implants is completed over the course of several months, typically divided into three to six visits with the dentist. During the pre-operative process, a mold of the jaw and teeth is taken, along with x-rays, to assess whether there is sufficient tissue and spacing available for implant placement. Following this assessment and any necessary bone grafting, the implants are surgically placed and temporary crowns, bridges or full or partial dentures are affixed to the posts.
An average of six months' time is allowed for the gum and bone to "heal around" the site of the implant through a process called osseointegration where the post fuses to the jaw bone. Meanwhile, the molds and x-rays will be used to prepare the permanent artificial teeth that will fit atop an abutment connected to the implant posts, providing the patient with a beautiful healthy bite.
